Helping Patients with Dementia: Crocheting for a Cause

Katherine Gantz Pannel, DO
Many patients with Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia develop anxiety, which can present as mental wandering and significant restless fidgeting. My thoughtful friend and colleague, Dr. Katherine Gantz Pannel, wanted to do something about it and came up with Crocheting for a Cause. You may read about this heartwarming project and learn how to get involved (or donate supplies) HERE!

I wish you all a meaningful and blessed Christmas!

Bouncing Back to the Midwest: From Surviving to Thriving

This week, I was blessed to travel to Minnesota to present the closing keynote at a physician wellness conference. It was special to return to the Midwest, having moved south from Wisconsin nearly 13 years ago! I spent precious time with old friends and made new ones. I attended sessions that both inspired and challenged us. It was a meaningful time to refuel, restore the heart and soul, and connect with people who care as much as I do about the central patient-physician relationship.

You may read more about my experience HERE, which includes a photo of the little Olaf my colleagues and I got to create. He may not be baby Yoda, but he's pretty cute!

Joyfully,

Dr. Mari

Inspired by Students, Blessed by Patients

Last week, I had the opportunity to speak with pre-health students at a college campus. It was a blast to be in that environment, sharing stories and information sprinkled with hope to young people with big dreams. They were insightful, inspiring, and full of curiosity.

Driving home, I kept thinking about their energy and excitement, and this made me think back to the many blessings I've accumulated over 25 years in medicine.

I loved my time with them so much and wrote about it here.
Enjoy it, and feel free to share!

Pursuing Wellness with Future Attorneys

Last week, I had the very meaningful opportunity to discuss wellness, mental health, and burnout prevention with the students and some faculty members at A&M College of Law. It was a very special day that brought back many memories of my mom's days in law school while I was in high school. It also made me realize that, regardless of our different areas of work, we are all living during very stressful times ... and we all need to support one another, be patient with each other, and perhaps also be kinder than necessary. Wouldn't that make the world a much better place?

We all have a story, and we are all going through situations others may not even know about. The need for empathy and compassion has never been greater.

I wrote about the special day HERE. Check it out and let me know what you think!

Joyfully,
Dr. Mari

Speak Up! My Article on the Power of Advocacy

This week, the Florida Medical Association published my article, The Power of Physician Advocacy. It is an excerpt from my latest book in which I share some of my story as an outspoken advocate for patients, high standards of medical care, patient safety, and physicians.

Medicine is increasingly complex, and physicians need more support than ever. To that end, I continue to write, advocate, travel, and speak to all who invite me to give a voice to both patients and physicians around the country. As in my book, I bring an inspiring message of hope that is informed by 25 years in medicine as a physician leader who is also a coach for physicians.

With the recent publication of Recapturing Joy in Medicine, I've been thrilled to see the book serve as a bridge between patients and their physicians. I keep hearing stories of patients who have read it cover to cover and then give it to their physicians as a gift. So heartwarming, and a wonderful and unexpected blessing.

I am blessed to serve at the state and national level in various ways and I am so grateful, in particular, to three organizations (FMA, FAFP, and AAFP) for so many opportunities to make a meaningful difference for our profession and for our patients. The patient-physician relationship remains the most rewarding aspect of practicing medicine for most physicians, according to the latest survey by The Physicians Foundation. My article on the power of physician advocacy is one more way to encourage and empower my colleagues to speak up for our needs, the needs of our teams, and our patients. This requires that we work together and nurture meaningful relationships with one another, that we may have more courage, wisdom, and discernment to fulfill our crucial role as advocates!

Incivility, Wisdom, and Second Chances

This week, one of my articles published in Family Practice Management, a practical and highly relevant peer-reviewed journal of the American Academy of Family Physicians. In the article, I share stories from my 25 years in medicine, along with ways I've learned to apply wisdom and discernment sprinkled with creative compassion to tackle tough clinical encounters while guarding my heart.

Find the link to the article here and feel free to share it with others! The title of the article is Incivility in Healthcare: Strategies to De-escalate Troubling Encounters.

Wrapping Up Summer & Looking Ahead!

With the recent publication of my fourth book, Recapturing Joy in Medicine, life has been full. We were blessed to have all our children home all summer, which meant frequent game nights, family walks and weekend getaways, and many meaningful and lively conversations. It also meant they were all an integral part of last month's book launch brunch. Thank you to everyone who participated, and special thanks to my husband, children, and to every supporter and cheerleader for helping make the launch and book signing such a lovely event!

Summer games, trips, and extra family time are now giving way to a new school year and a return to our usual routines. For me, this also means more interviews, writing, and continued planning for speaking engagements around the country (contact me HERE if you'd like to discuss a speaking event, book signing, workshop, or however you'd like me to serve your group). It's been an exciting time to share my story, continue to encourage and empower medical professionals, and spread the word about this new and unique, hands-on, practical, and inspiring resource. I feel so blessed!

As I transitioned to my new website this summer, it's been a bit of a challenge to keep up with this blog as well. So ... below are just a few of my new posts from the new website, and I'll do my best to continue to post here as the transition with my new team and digital hub is complete. Thank you for your patience, and let me know if you have any questions, comments, or ideas. I'd love to hear from you!

Joyfully,

Dr. Mari

Recent & Upcoming Events, Including Official Book Launch!

It's been a very full and meaningful few weeks since the release of my fourth book, Recapturing Joy in Medicine. I am so grateful for the extremely positive response from so many physicians, residency directors, attendings, residents, medical students, physicians in practice, medical school faculty, and other clinicians. I have also been so touched by the many people who have purchased copies to give as gifts to their physicians! It has been heartwarming to dedicate those books to my colleagues knowing they will receive such an encouraging and valuable gift from patients who appreciate and value them. How special!

These physicians will be able to use the book as an encouraging, inspiring, practical resource throughout their careers. After a long journey full of obstacles and challenges that could have easily derailed and halted its publication, the book is already making a difference among my colleagues. I couldn't be happier!

Here's an abridged summary of recent and upcoming events that links to my new website. This includes information about the official book launch, which will take place August 4th in Winter Park, Florida. I'm also thrilled to have started a book study with female physicians in Orlando. Our first meeting was inspiring, hopeful, healing ... and I can't wait to read through the book and work on the practical exercises together!

Yes, I plan to use my book, too, as the coaching manual it is, especially as I enter into an exciting season of serving my colleagues, residents, medical students, hospitals, clinics, and the entire medical team in new ways now that the book is available. Truth is, we would all benefit from such a resource!

Thank you to the wonderful women who contributed so much to the success of our first meeting this week. If you are a female physician (MD, DO, or MBBS) in the Orlando area and would like to join us, please let me know here.

Earlier this month, I wrote a July 1st message for new interns, residents, and all physicians. You may read it here, and feel free to share it with others. We're all in this together!

Joyfully,
Dr. Mari (Amaryllis)

TODAY IS THE DAY!

My book, Recapturing Joy in Medicine, is NOW AVAILABLE!!!

https://www.xulonpress.com/bookstore/bookdetail.php?PB_ISBN=9781545654286&HC_ISBN=

It's been a tremendous privilege to research, write, and work on this project for years, including pursuing further training (beyond being a Board-certified family physician) as a health and wellness coach, in leadership coaching, and in targeted coaching to prevent physician burnout and support my colleagues on a journey to greater meaning and joy.     I have learned so much from my colleagues. This resource is an expression of my gratitude for you your dedication, unswerving commitment to our patients, and excellence and my desire to bless, encourage, and empower each of you!
The book is interactive, practical, and hopeful as well as a call to action. I remind physicians of the sacrifices we made to become physicians and of the privilege we have to care for our patients in what remains a noble profession!

Special thanks to my wonderful husband and children and to so many friends who are like family for your loving support and encouragement throughout the writing process! A special heartfelt thanks to every one of you in my support team during unexpected challenges that transformed both the book and its author! Thank you to all who reviewed the manuscript and offered such valuable input. And my deep gratitude to every physician who reviewed the manuscript and offered advice and encouragement and such lovely endorsements of the book and my work on behalf of physicians and patients. The journey has been long and full of obstacles and, yet, here we are!! Just like our training: every drop of sweat and tears and all the long nights are worth it to experience the joy that awaits in the morning

I am thrilled to share this unique resource. I have not seen another book like it, so I pray it is read by everyone who needs it (and by leaders in medical schools, residency programs, and hospitals who can make it accessible to those who need it but may not otherwise know about it!). My sincere hope is that this book will help transform the culture of medicine while equipping and inspiring my colleagues in their daily lives and workfor their benefit and that of our patients.

Be well, and thanks for helping me spread the word!

It is with tremendous JOY I announce that my new book, Recapturing Joy in Medicine, is now available!

Below is the original post from May 2019 when the book was approaching publication.

After years of research, writing, and revisions, the book is now around the corner, and I couldn't be more pleased with how it turned out. As you know, I have now been speaking to physicians, medical students, residents, and health professionals for over a decade, even before physician burnout was talked about like it is now. All these years of interacting with hundreds of physicians one-one-one before and after my presentations have equipped me with so much knowledge and awareness to add to my twenty-five years in medicine and leadership that began when I served as chief resident and as president of the Florida Association of Family Medicine Residents.

It's been a tremendous privilege I have learned so much from my colleagues. This resource is an expression of my gratitude for you your dedication, your unswerving commitment to our patients, and your excellence and my deep desire to bless, encourage, and empower each of you!

The book is practical and hopeful as well as a call to action. I remind physicians of the sacrifices we made to become physicians and of the privilege we have to care for our patients in what remains a noble profession!

Thank you for your loving support and encouragement throughout the writing process! It's been long and difficult and full of obstacles and, yet, here we are!! Just like our training: every drop of sweat and tears and all the long nights are worth it to experience the joy that awaits in the morning

There is a morning ahead for every physician who is burned out, burning out, or recovering from burnout. Yep. That's all of us right there, I know! Stay encouraged, find your tribe, and continue to rely on one another just like you did in training!

If the system continues to disempower and undervalue physicians despite our sacrifices and expertise, then it is time for physicians to empower one another.

That is what I am here to do, and that is what this book will accomplish for our profession. I can't wait.

Stay encouraged!
